Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman has taken to social media to express her disappointment with Facebook for restricting domestic violence related Facebook pages, and it seems her efforts have seen a few service providers Facebook pages restored.

“Facebook banned Australians seeing or sharing news content. Along with their ban, critical sexual, domestic and family violence service providers Facebook pages were restricted,” she said.

“Crucial domestic and family violence support services such as DVConnect, Centre Against Domestic Abuse Inc. and Domestic Violence Prevention Centre have had their Facebook pages wiped.

“These pages are so important – they provide critical information and resources for women experiencing domestic and family violence, as well as raise public awareness.

“This is an outrageous move from Facebook, especially during a pandemic.

“This is a concerning and dangerous situation given that the continuous coverage within the media around sexual assault and domestic violence is likely to result in an increase in people seeking support.”

Ms Fentiman said a list of service providers block was sent to Facebook.

“They have said they are working to unblock them today.”

At the time of writing, a few service providers have had their Facebook pages restored.
