A Queensland political expert says while it’s doubtful that any of the seats in the Logan/Scenic Rim region will likely change hands in the state election, the one wildcard is probably One Nation.
Dr Tracey Arklay, a senior lecturer with the School of Government and International Relations at Griffith University, says even though all six seats look to be safe for the major parties, Pauline Hanson’s party could put them under some pressure.
“Woodridge (held by the ALP’s Cameron Dick) is the safest seat in the area, so safe in fact that it can almost be called now,” said Dr Arklay.
“The Scenic Rim, held by the LNP (Jon Krause MP) is just as safe, however, the same can’t be said for the four other electorates.
“One Nation improved their polling at the last state election in 2017, and based on that, they look like they could give the sitting members a run for their money this month, although that will largely depend on voter sentiment and how discontented they are with the current government.”
As far as the electorate of Logan is concerned, Dr Arklay suggests it is one of the more marginal of the region’s seats and sitting member Linus Power of the ALP might be pressured by the LNP’s decision to put Labor last on preferences, which could help One Nation.
