Temple planned for Fijian Hindu community

The backers behind a temple for the local Fijian Hindu community at South Maclean, says the site could be an asset for the greater community.

Logan City Council has received an Material Change of Use Impact Application for a Place of Worship at 1 Casuarina Road, South Maclean.

The application was lodged by the Sangam Association of Queensland Inc earlier this month.

An approval for the temple was previously issued, but has since lapsed due to funding constraints preventing works commencing.

This new proposal is a scaled down proposal which is financially achievable for the community.

The proposal includes plans for a Mari Amman temple in the current domestic shed, various shrines in existing shade structures, a caretaker’s residence in the existing house, a new toilet block addition to the shed / temple, as well as car parking area.

The temple is anticipated to provide much needed cultural infrastructure for the Fijian Hindu community in the Logan area.

The Fijian Hindu Community intends to provide a number of community activities where not only Hindus are welcome but also the wider community, including residents living nearby.

An inclusive religion, Hindu services are open to anyone to attend with a few minor conditions relating to religious practices such as removing shoes in the temple.

The normal hours of operation for the temple will be 6am to 10pm.

Additional and evening ceremonies may be conducted on the weekends.

While it has been requested that the development is approved, Council will decide on the proposal at a later date.
