Youth crime laws to be toughened up

The State Government’s war on youth crime has ramped up, with the introduction yesterday of tough new laws in parliament.

It’s in response to a number of incidents, including the deaths of a pregnant  woman and her partner in Alexandra Hills on Australia Day, who were hit and killed allegedly by a 17 year old from Waterford West.

G-P-S trackers and a presumption against bail are among the proposed changes for serious repeat offenders.

Police Minister Mark Ryan has told parliament, the laws aim to target those offenders.

“These youth offenders do not respond to existing law enforcement measures. So, we are expanding the tools accessible to police and the courts to target their behaviours and we make no apologies for this tough stance”.
