One way to do so is to sign up to the early warning network, a service that alerts users to potentially dangerous weather events.

Nearly 20,000 Logan City residents have already registered for the service, which has the full backing of Logan City Council.

Scott Mayman, editor of MyNewsFeed, and his son were stranded in Longreach on Sunday night and Monday while on a short visit when a strong thunderstorm moved in bringing heavy rain and causing blackouts in outback Queensland.

Some tourists were stranded due to floodwaters that stopped local transportation services.

It is understood the storm was spawned by a trough disturbance associated with ex-tropical cyclone Imogen, resulting in flooding around the region, an amazing and welcomed sight for locals.
