Logan Hospital is the first in Queensland to trial a new bariatric bed, which has already made a difference to patients in the Emergency Department.

Nurse Navigator for Bariatric Care Lorraine Treanor said having the ability to move patients who were in an acute phase into a bed that met their needs was very reassuring.

“We know that one size does not fit all,” she said.

“This bed allows us to sit a patient up so they can breathe more easily and it gives them greater mobility and independence.”

Ms Treanor said while the bed “lived” in the ED, it could be used to transfer patients to the wards.

“The bed has already been very well utilised and patients have told us the memory foam is extremely comfortable,” she said.

“When the bed is in the ward and is no longer required, staff can call the 1800 number on the bed and it will be collected.”

Ms Treanor said the trial would continue for several more months.
