A welfare check on a man suffering from a mental health episode has sparked a five-hour siege with police in South Toowoomba.
The stand-off began about 7am yesterday when police officers went to the Ruthven Street home of a man who was threatening to self harm, and had barricaded himself inside his unit.
One of the officers was sprayed in the face with an unknown substance, and was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with an eye irritation.
After hours of negotiations with the man failed, officers from the Public Safety Response Team armed with riot shields arrived and at about 1.14pm and forced their way into the home to end the five-hour siege.
The man was seen yelling and screaming as he was removed from the unit and taken into police custody before he was transported under police guard to Toowoomba Hospital.
Police are treating the stand off as a mental health incident, and no charges have been laid.
