Logan City Mayor Darren Power says Council is stepping up efforts to fight off the Japanese Encephalitis virus.
The emergence of the virus across Australia for the first time, has coincided with the floods.
To combat the virus, Logan City Council has launched a targeted public health campaign to quickly tackle the threat of mosquito-borne viruses.
The campaign is designed to protect the community’s health and well-being during the recovery period, after the recent widespread flooding.
Mayor Darren Power says the local mosquito program will be ramped up to combat the new threat.
Mayor Power also called on residents to check for water on their properties, following recent floods.
“Unfortunately it is not just the local authorities that need to do the work, it is the resident themselves.
“We have localised breeding happening in our own backyards.
“What I want residents to do is to visit their backyards and to see where water has been trapped.
“It might be an old tyre, there might be an old bucket lying around, it might be anywhere in the garden or in the gutters.
“Any water that has been laying around for a few days, mosquitoes can breed from there.”
No cases of the virus have been reported locally, but it is considered a risk to public health.
