Attorney General issues statement on Domestic Violence

Following the two deaths relating to a domestic violence incident in a house fire at New Beith yesterday morning Waterford MP and Attorney General Shannon Fentiman has issued a statement.

Minister Fentiman says, “Every death from domestic and family violence is unacceptable and an absolute tragedy.”

“The Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce has made 89 recommendations on how we can improve the system to better support victims and hold perpetrators to account.”

“These recommendations are based on the submissions of over 700 brave women who came forward to share their experiences with the system and how it failed them.”

“The report also made it clear that our criminal justice system’s current approach of responding to a single – usually physical – incident of domestic violence is outdated given what we know about the dangers of non-physical violence and the importance of looking at the full context of a relationship.”

“We are prepared to take action on these serious issues, including how to improve frontline responses.”

“We know there is more to do and the government is carefully considering all of these recommendations and will be providing a response soon.”
