QRL to improve player pathways to NRL

The Queensland Rugby League will look at how to improve pathways for players to make it to the NRL, and ultimately Origin, following this year’s series win.

Several ex-Logan players made it to the highest level after starting their football locally, including Josh Papalii and cousins Brenko and Edrick Lee.

QRL head of football Rowan Sawyer says the plan is to get as many Queenslanders as possible into the NRL.

“The job of the QRL is to promote young players into the NRL or NRLW and from there we can pick our Origin sides,” said Rowan.

“At the moment, Queensland has only about 20% eligible NRL players, New South Wales has got about 40%, so our job is to bridge that gap and try to get as many players into the NRL.”
