Midwife Nicole Jordan is inspired daily, witnessing the “courage, strength and determination” of those who come through the birthing suites at Beaudesert Hospital’s maternity ward, and this International Women’s Day, Nicole is advocating for mothers and babies.
“I would like to see an end to the taboo and stigma in pregnancy, birthing and the postpartum period – the women in our lives deserve to be understood,” Nicole says.
Following her fascination with anatomy, in particular the delicate interplay of the mind and body during labour and birth, Nicole became a midwife five years ago, becoming more passionate about advocating for women since.
“I was fortunate enough to receive a position at Beaudesert Hospital after I had graduated, where I was welcomed by a strong team of highly-skilled women, who focused on a true woman-centred philosophy,” Nicole says.
During her time with Metro South Health, Nicole has also worked closely with young mums through the Logan Maternity Hubs to provide continuity-of-care to those who need extra support. Continuity-of-care is when a woman sees the same midwife throughout her pregnancy, birth and postpartum period, and has proven to improve outcomes for both mothers and babies, something Nicole has witnessed first-hand.
“I am passionate in believing that the role of the midwife is not only to care and support women, but it is to educate and advocate for them, especially during their most vulnerable times,” she says.
“It’s really important to me that I help the women I care for make informed and safe decisions for themselves and their babies, and I feel as though this starts by empowering women to believe in themselves and their body.
“I love that I have the opportunity to brighten the day for other people, whether that is my colleagues or the women I care for and their families.
“I am truly inspired by the women I am fortunate enough to care for every day. I am in awe of their courage, strength and determination.”
