City of Logan flood update

City of Logan residents are advised to continue exercising extreme caution as  several major roads have reopened to traffic. 

But with heavy rainfall in parts of the city this morning, and storms forecast for the next two days, any flash flooding that may occur could result in some local streets being closed again. 

Major roads that have reopened (as of 2pm today) include: 

  • Chambers Flat Rd, Chambers Flat (Between Grevillea Rd and Kenny Rd) Millstream Rd, Jimboomba 
  • McTagget Rd, Greenbank 
  • Jutland St, Loganlea 
  • Coral St, Loganlea 
  • Battle St, Loganlea 
  • Waterford Brisbane Rd, Bethania 
  • Kingston Rd, Kingston 

Access to Logan Hospital from the western end of Loganlea Road is a priority for the Council.

Floodwaters have receded in the area but significant debris needs to be cleared.  

Anzac Avenue (Logan Village) and Bayes Road (Logan Reserve) are also prioritised  for reopening. 

About 150 roads across the city remain closed or affected by floodwaters.

Bridges that are now open following safety assessments include: 

  • Browns Plains Rd (both bridges) at Berrinba 
  • Third Ave (both bridges) at Marsden 
  • Edward O’Neill Bridge, Kilmoylar Rd, Jimboomba 
  • Wharburton Bridge, Teviot Rd, South Maclean 
  • Flagstone Creek Bridge, Teviot Rd, Jimboomba 
  • Geoff Phillips Bridge, Anzac Ave, Logan Village (western approach is still  under water and closed)
  • Edward Bridge, Goodna Rd, Greenbank 
  • J.S.Cochrane Bridge, Undullah Rd, Undullah 
  • Freeman Timber bridge, Veresdale Scrub School Rd, Veresdale Teese Bridge, Veresdale Scrub School Road, Veresdale 
  • Wilson Bridge, Mactaggart Road, New Beith 
  • Macctagart Bridge, Mactaggart Road, New Beith 
  • Oxley Bridge, Spring Mountain Road, New Beith 
  • Spring Mountain Bridge, Spring Mountain Road, New Beith 

Several other bridges, including those in Cusack Lane, Jimboomba and Queens Rd and Loganlea Rd, Slacks Creek, still require safety assessments before they can reopen.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power encourages residents to remain alert as  communities reconnect. 

“While it has been encouraging to see floodwaters recede in recent days, this severe  weather event is not over yet.” 

 

“Drivers must remain patient and avoid taking any unnecessary risks on our roads.” 

The City of Logan evacuation centre at inSports Logan Metro Health, Fitness &  Events Centre in Crestmead, remains open to support residents displaced by  floodwaters.  

The centre, at 357 Browns Plains Road, is being coordinated 24/7 by Red Cross, the  SES, the Salvation Army and volunteers. It provides showers, limited food and drinks  and beds and blankets.  

Temporary places of refuge, where residents can use toilets, charge their devices, or  have a tea or coffee break, also continue to operate. These venues are not providing  overnight accommodation.

Other flood-related developments in the City of Logan today include:  

  • A free kerbside collection of flood debris and flood-damaged items will be  available in flood-affected residential areas from next week. More  information will be confirmed soon. Different types of waste should be placed  in separate piles on the footpath. If there is flood-affected asbestos material  contact Council for assistance. 
  • Residents can also dispose of flood-related waste and rubbish free of charge  at any of Council’s Waste and Recycling Facilities at Browns Plains,  Beenleigh, Carbrook, Greenbank and Logan Village. 
  • Those wanting to volunteer to help clean up can register through Volunteering  Queensland at Volunteering Registration (emergencyvolunteering.com.au). All  registered volunteers should wait to be directed to a clean-up site.
  • Those who have been without electricity for an extended period should practise food safety precautions. Advice on managing your food supply is available at https://foodsafety.asn.au/when-the-power-goes-off/ 
  • Eligible community organisations, schools and social enterprises can apply for  up to $5000 from Logan City Council to support community response and  recovery efforts. Flood-related applications will be fast-tracked. More  information about Community Response Grants and the online application  form can be found at logan.qld.gov.au/cdf
  • Financial support is also available from the Australian and Queensland governments.
