There is plenty to be excited about at the Logan Central Community Centre this year, as centre management plans to take on new ventures.
Since 1982, the Logan Central Community Centre has provided a space for community members to enjoy a range of activities, events and programs.
Staff and volunteers at the centre aim to help steer people in the right direction, while the centre is also the base for the Logan Area Committee on the Ageing (LACOTA), Logan Community Visitors Scheme, Aged Care Navigators program, Amputees and Families Support Group (AFSG) QLD and Logan Central Meals on Wheels service.
LACOTA Manager Sam Prior says there is plenty to be excited about.
Mr Prior says the new initiatives include an op-shop, street lockers, new events and plans to acquire a mini-bus.
“We’re about to open an op-shop, providing clothing for low-income earners, with the profits of the store to go towards providing clothing for the homeless.
“We’re also trying to get some street lockers installed outside the building for people in need.
“Those in need will be given a key for a locker, to put whatever belongings they have away for a while, they can lock it up safely here.
“We’re also hoping to put on some fresh events, like Jazz and Rock n Roll on Friday afternoons.
“We’re also hoping to get a mini-bus to help the elderly get here for activities and events.”
After a couple of tumultuous years, Mr Prior says it is nice that the centre continues to operate.
“We’ve had one disaster after another with COVID-19 and then the floods, which made it hard to find funds to help others.
“COVID caused us to shut everything down, it was a long struggle, we got to the point where we were close to stepping away, but luckily everywhere started to open up again, so we could start hiring out the building again.
“Having to go to double vaccination bookings, cut down our ability to hire to a lot of groups, but most of our standard groups are back and running fully now.”
A range of activities are currently offered at the Logan Central Community Centre including indoor bowls, belly dancing classes, gardening club, craft group, yoga and zumba, while the centre hosts a regular church service on Sunday.
The Logan Central Community Centre is located at 9-11 Jacaranda Avenue, Logan Central.
