Construction has started on the $1.53 million sports hall refurbishment at Shailer Park State High School, with Logan City’s biggest sports group already on board to make use of the new basketball courts.
The refurbishment has been in the works for the past two years, with planning for construction starting six months ago.

It has been funded by the Queensland Government, and is a collaboration between the Department of Education and the Department of Housing and Public Works and Sport and Recreation, under the Community Use of Schools Program.
A Department of Education Spokesperson said the new facility is on track to be completed by early 2021.
“The school community welcomes this exciting investment in educational infrastructure which will provide new and improved sport and activity spaces including competition sized basketball court with line marking for additional sports, gymnasium and satellite stage area,” they said.
“In addition, the facility will be able to accommodate large assemblies and presentations with enhanced audio-visual performance capabilities.

“The department is thrilled to be investing in local sport in the Logan district.”
Logan Basketball will also benefit from the project, with the club currently operating out of the Cornubia Park Sports Centre.
Logan Basketball general manager Mitch Young said they will have access to the court outside of school hours, for the next 10 years.
“We’re very excited about it,” Mr Young said.
“We have a growing club and really need the extra space and facilities.
“Our playing membership is over 15,000 members for the summer season. Which is huge for us. This is the most members we’ve ever had and comes off of a really successful season for the club.

“We’re the biggest grassroots sports club in Logan and having access to this space will mean great things for our club, teams, and players.
“We’ll be able to run more programs, have more development opportunities for our players, run more community programs, and will hopefully be able to grow our membership even more and get more locals to be active.”
