Logan Libraries lifting spirits during lockdown and beyond

WITH the COVID-19 pandemic locking down all nine Logan City Council Library branches earlier this year, library staff searched for different ways to support their community.

During the lockdown period, Logan Libraries ensured members had access to a plethora of free digital and online resources. The initiative proved popular, with up to 700 digital titles being borrowed every day and almost 650 new members accessing the service.

To continue supporting the lifelong learning of its residents throughout the lockdown and beyond, Logan Libraries also organised a bulk delivery of resources and books to 422 residents in late March to help when libraries were closed.

Another delivery of resources was made to 45 Logan families without computers to assist with homeschooling requirements, while library iPads were loaned to residents with accessibility requirements.

Logan Libraries also launched two programs in April of this year, The Home Learning Hub, a web resource to support families needing help with home learning, and The Reading Help service, which offer help to children needing assistance with reading or practising to speak English.

City Lifestyle Committee Chairperson Councillor Laurie Koranski said Logan’s Libraries have been an essential service in supporting the community during the pandemic, adding that library staff had developed new and COVID-safe ways for people to access library activities and programs.

“It is vital they are responsive to current and emerging needs and the aspirations of the community, and they have shown they are,” Cr Koranski said.

“One example is the way in which they have adapted their programming this year. They have included virtual workshops and seminars on topics that can support the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Logan City Council yesterday acknowledged the support for the community by Logan Libraries after an update on the Libraries Learning and Discovery Strategy 2019-2023, which sets out the learning and engagement experiences for the next three years.
