Logan’s koalas listed as endangered

There is an increased focus on protecting the Logan koala population, after the national icon was recently listed as an endangered species.

The Australian Government updated the status of Koalas in Queensland from vulnerable to endangered in the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 last week.

Koalas can be sighted in various areas across the City of Logan from Daisy Hill, Shailer Park, Carbrook, Priestdale and Cornubia through to Greenbank, Lyons, New  Beith, Undullah, Tamborine and Mundoolun.

Current data on the presence of koalas in the city is mostly anecdotal and not a result of targeted scientific surveys.

Late last year, Logan City Council vowed to support a strategy to save local koalas, providing mapping is supported by scientific data, while Logan residents were encouraged to take part in a koala count throughout November.

30 koala observations were recorded last November during the community koala count.

The results from this survey will help Council implement and advocate for future  conservation actions and programs to protect and support the conservation of koalas and their habitat.

Logan City Council is  one of the few Queensland local governments  that has adopted its own Koala Conservation Strategy.

The City of Logan Koala Conservation Strategic Plan 2013-2023 demonstrates Council’s commitment to koala conservation.

Residents are encouraged to report their koala sightings online at logan.qld.gov.au/report-wildlife-sightings
