M1’s multi-vehicle crash: “Lucky nobody was killed”

Logan City residents were this morning affected by heavy traffic congestion as a result of a multi-vehicle crash on the M1 today.

Queensland Ambulance Service Senior Operations Supervisor David Martin says that shortly after 5:30am, QAS were called to reports of a multi-vehicle collision southbound at Ormeau on the Gold Coast.

“On our arrival, we were faced with several, vehicles some of which were overturned, two persons who were trapped, and a total of five other patients. In total we transported a total of seven patients to Gold Coast University Hospital, three of whom were in a serious condition, and four with minor injuries.

“On the Gold Coast, this is one of the largest multi-[vehicle] incidents that we’ve had recently.

“At this stage, the Queensland Police Service are investigating the cause of the collision, however we were called to a report of a vehicle that had crossed from the Northbound carriageway onto the Southbound carriageway, and it certainly appeared that way when we arrived.

“It was extremely lucky when we were confronted with a scene like that, that nobody was killed. On my arrival, it wouldn’t have been a surprise when I investigated further to have found deceased people.

“Fortunately, all the Emergency Services worked well together and the clean-up operation was very smooth and efficient, which enabled the motorway to be opened very swiftly.

“The resulting traffic did cause some issues responding to other emergencies, when we’re faced with traffic such as that, particularly with the workload we are currently facing, it can be very, very difficult.

“On that note, I would like to make a particular point of thanking the motorists who cleared a pathway for Emergency Services to get through to that collision and the other incidents we responded to.”
