Major flood watch on Logan River

Loganholme, Park Ridge and Beenleigh locals are keeping an eye on the Logan River, as major flooding takes place in low-lying areas.

It comes as Logan’s Disaster Management Group has issued an emergency alert to people in Loganholme, Park Ridge and Beenleigh.

The Group says residents should plan and take action to stay safe.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the Logan River at Parklands is currently at 6 metres and experiencing major flooding.

It’s likely to exceed 6.30 metres this afternoon and continue rising into tomorrow, as flood waters arrive from upstream.

Loganholme local Mark Ellis says this is the biggest flood he has seen in the area.

Mr Ellis says the Logan River is raging and full of debris.

“There has been some incredible debris flow through.

“There has been the usual trees and logs, but we have also seen a kid’s swing set, steel boxes and heaps of barrels come through.”

In a sign of community spirit, Mr Ellis says locals have come together to support and help  each other.

“Everyone in this street really rallies together, we’ve had a couple of floods over the last decade, so we all know which houses go under first.

“Everyone has gone around and help the neighbours that are the lowest and move their stuff.

“We’re pretty used to it.”

After experiencing several floods, Mr Ellis says it is important to keep spirits high in trying times.

“While you can prepare, sometimes there is not much you can do, so you might as well relax and deal with it afterwards when you can.

“There is no point panicking over what you can’t change.

“There is a flood, we will deal with it when the water starts to recede.”

Locals are encouraged to stay up to date with the latest information from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
