Hydralyte Launches Bold New Campaign After Three-Year Break
When Five by Five Global won the pitch to create Hydralyte's new campaign, the independent agency faced both opportunity and pressure: producing work worthy of the category leader's three-year advertising hiatus.
The resulting campaign, "Drench Your Thirst," marked a creative departure for the rehydration brand. Rather than conventional product promotion, the work uses visual hyperbole to dramatise the rehydration process itself—capturing the moment the body responds when reaching for a bottle. It's a bold strategy that transforms a familiar consumer action into something visually arresting and, crucially, entertaining.
For Five by Five Global, the campaign represented a significant milestone: the first major project unveiled under newly appointed managing director Mark Anderson. The brief offered a clear creative challenge.
"Hydralyte leads the category and we wanted to find a way to boldly reaffirm this position with consumers and dramatise the rehydration process, by turning this into a visually captivating experience that resonates with, but also entertains, consumers," Anderson said of the agency's approach.
Executing the concept presented real-world challenges. Creating convincing water-based visual effects while maintaining authenticity demanded meticulous planning. Yet the entire shoot wrapped in a single day—a significant achievement reflecting the value of pre-production rigour and collaboration between agency, client and production partners.
The Woodshed, the production company handling the shoot, delivered multiple scenes in that compressed timeframe, with the rehydration effects appearing natural rather than artificial or contrived.
"The client gave us a lot of creative freedom and the talent did a brilliant job ensuring we completed the shoot in one day, a big achievement when working with water in this way," Anderson said. "The Woodshed did an incredible job nailing each of the scenes and editing."
For Care Pharmaceuticals, which markets Hydralyte, the investment in fresh creative direction was deliberate. Alexis Wormleaton, senior brand manager, emphasised the balance the campaign struck between brand visibility and entertainment value.
"The brand plays a very clear role in the storytelling, without detracting from the entertainment. The proposition couldn't be conveyed more bluntly," Wormleaton said, crediting pre-production planning for enabling effective visual execution.
The campaign rolled out on 1 October across television, cinema, outdoor advertising and social media, with media planning handled by This is Flow. The multi-channel strategy reflects ambitions to reach consumers across the modern media landscape—from traditional broadcast to digital platforms.
For Five by Five Global, the campaign signals momentum at a moment when the agency is establishing its market position under Anderson's leadership. In Australia's competitive advertising landscape, winning and delivering a campaign for a category-leading brand demonstrates both creative strength and operational capability.
