Armed man arrested after six-hour police standoff in Logan

A 27-year-old man has been arrested following a six-hour armed standoff with police in Logan, south of Brisbane, that prompted an emergency declaration and forced several streets to close early on Thursday morning.

Officers responded to reports of a disturbance at a Chambers Flat Road residence in Logan Reserve just after midnight. What began as a noise complaint escalated into an extended negotiation with a man believed to be armed, with police establishing a broad exclusion zone that closed Chambers Flat Road, School Road, and Loganview Road to traffic and residents.

The man, who is known to police, spent much of the early morning in an agitated state, alternating between willingness to negotiate and periods of refusal to engage with officers. Police confirmed they observed what appeared to be a pistol in his possession during the standoff.

The situation remained tense and unresolved through the night. Just before 6am on Thursday morning, the emergency declaration was formally issued under the Public Safety Preservation Act as the impasse continued. The declaration underscored the seriousness of the situation and the commitment of police resources to resolving it safely.

Shortly after the emergency declaration, however, the dynamics shifted. The man emerged from the property and entered into direct, face-to-face negotiations with officers for the first time. Those discussions proved decisive: he surrendered peacefully in the front yard, bringing the standoff to a close without injury.

Acting Inspector Jason Barrowcliffe described the unpredictable nature of the negotiation. "The male was in an agitated state so he was negotiating at some points, other times he wasn't," Barrowcliffe said. "This morning he actively came out of the house and started face-to-face negotiations. So then he just surrendered to us and he was secured in the front yard."

Police had advised residents within the exclusion zone to remain indoors throughout the operation. Several families attempted to leave their homes during the standoff but were directed to shelter in place as officers worked to resolve the situation safely.

Despite officers witnessing the man holding what they believed to be a pistol, a subsequent search of the property did not immediately locate a firearm. Police continued searching the premises on Thursday morning to determine whether the man had possessed a real weapon or a replica. The man had made threats toward police at various points during the standoff, adding to the gravity of the situation.

The 27-year-old was transported to hospital uninjured for observation and assessment. Police say he remains known to them in relation to other matters. The successful peaceful resolution highlighted the value of sustained, patient police negotiation in defusing volatile situations.
