Baby Safe After Car Stolen From Yeppoon Shopping Centre

A four-month-old baby is safe after a brazen daylight car theft from a Yeppoon shopping centre that has shaken the local community.

The incident happened shortly after midday on Wednesday when a woman allegedly got into an unattended grey Nissan Patrol while the mother was loading shopping. With the infant still in the back seat, the vehicle was driven away.

The mother quickly realised what had happened and confronted the driver at the scene. The baby was immediately removed to safety, but the thief continued driving — striking two people in the car park as she fled. A 16-year-old boy and a 39-year-old woman suffered leg injuries and were transported to Yeppoon Hospital.

Police located the stolen Patrol around 4pm the same day. A 24-year-old woman from Cobraball and a 36-year-old man from Mount Morgan were arrested. The woman was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, child abduction, driving without a licence, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Her co-accused was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Both were refused police bail and are due to appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court.
