Baby Safe After Car Stolen With Child Inside at Yeppoon

A Yeppoon shopping centre became the scene of a shocking carjacking this week, setting the community on edge after a vehicle was stolen with a four-month-old baby still trapped inside.

The incident unfolded just after midday on Wednesday when a mother was loading shopping into her grey Nissan Patrol at the busy shopping precinct. A woman approached the parked vehicle, climbed into the driver's seat and drove away—apparently oblivious to the infant asleep in the rear car seat.

When the mother realised her child was gone, she sprang into action. She ran after the fleeing vehicle and managed to catch the driver, forcefully demanding that the baby be handed back. The thief complied, handing over the four-month-old before driving off in the stolen Patrol.

That moment of relief would be short-lived. As the vehicle accelerated through the car park, it struck two bystanders: a 16-year-old boy and a 39-year-old woman. Both suffered leg injuries and were transported to Yeppoon Hospital for treatment. The child, mercifully, sustained no physical harm.

Queensland Police responded swiftly. By around 4pm on Wednesday, officers had located the stolen vehicle and arrested two occupants: a 36-year-old man from Mount Morgan and a 24-year-old woman from Cobraball. Neither was granted police bail.

The charges reveal a troubling picture of premeditation and recklessness. The 24-year-old faces four offences: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, abduction of a child, and driving without a licence. The 36-year-old has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Both were scheduled to face Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Thursday.

For Yeppoon residents and regular shoppers at the precinct, the incident raises uncomfortable questions about safety in what should be a routine destination. A carjacking is alarming on its own; the involvement of a child and the subsequent hit-and-run injuries amplify the concern far beyond the usual shoplifting or parking-lot security.

The shopping centre is where families conduct daily errands and children are expected to be safest. This week's events have reminded the community that danger can emerge suddenly, even in broad daylight and crowded spaces.

Fortunately, the outcome was not catastrophic. The baby survived without injury, and the suspects were apprehended within hours. Still, the speed and severity with which the situation spiralled—from theft to child endangerment to hit-and-run in minutes—will likely weigh on the minds of shoppers across central Queensland for some time to come.
