Brisbane Childcare Worker Charged with 1623 Abuse Offences

Childcare families across Brisbane and Sydney are confronting a profound breach of institutional trust following charges against a 45-year-old man from the Gold Coast accused of 1623 child abuse offences against 91 children — among the most serious cases of abuse at childcare facilities in Australian history.

The man allegedly perpetrated offences at 10 childcare centres in Brisbane during two distinct periods: 2007 to 2013 and again between 2018 and 2022. Additional offences allegedly occurred at a Sydney centre between 2014 and 2017, and an overseas location in 2013 and 2014. All alleged victims were prepubescent girls, though some are now adults.

The charges encompass 136 counts of rape and 110 counts of sexual intercourse with children under 10. Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Justine Gough said the man systematically documented his alleged offending on cameras and phones, accumulating approximately 70 images and videos over a 15-year span.

"This is one of the most horrific child-abuse cases that I've seen in nearly 40 years of policing," said NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald. New South Wales authorities are pursuing extradition charges — 180 additional counts that carry a potential life sentence — in addition to federal charges.

The investigation unravelled through international police coordination and modern investigative technique. Queensland detectives monitoring the darknet first identified child abuse images circulating online. They cross-referenced physical objects visible in the photographs — furniture and other identifiable items — to pinpoint specific Brisbane childcare centres, a forensic approach that proved pivotal to building the case.

A specialist joint task force comprising 35 experts from the AFP and Queensland Police examined nearly 4000 seized images and videos over several months. The painstaking process identified all 87 Australian children depicted in the abuse material. International law enforcement partners are working to identify a further four overseas victims.

For families across Brisbane and Sydney, the case raises critical questions about childcare centre vetting, background checks, and workplace supervision. The man held all necessary qualifications to work with children and appeared to pose no red flags — yet his alleged offending continued across multiple organisations and years without detection, highlighting potential gaps in institutional safeguards.

All affected families have been notified by authorities. The man remains in custody following his arrest in August last year. The case is due for mention in Brisbane Magistrates' Court on 21 August.
