Gold Coast man charged with 1623 child abuse offences

Queensland's childcare community is grappling with one of Australia's most disturbing abuse cases after authorities charged a 45-year-old Gold Coast man with 1623 child abuse offences committed against 91 children. The scale of the investigation has shocked law enforcement, requiring a multi-state task force of 35 forensic experts to uncover and prosecute the alleged crimes spanning 15 years.

The offences allegedly occurred at childcare centres in Brisbane between 2007–2013 and 2018–2022, a Sydney centre from 2014–2017, and overseas locations in 2013–2014. Australian Federal Police say charges include 136 counts of rape and 110 counts of sexual intercourse with children under 10. All victims were prepubescent girls; some are now adults. Authorities have notified every affected family.

The investigation began when Queensland police monitoring darknet activity discovered images of children being exploited online. Officers undertook painstaking detective work, matching details visible in the photographs—furniture, backgrounds—to a Brisbane childcare centre. That breakthrough launched one of Australia's most complex child protection investigations.

The man allegedly recorded his offending on mobile phones and cameras over the period, producing approximately 70 videos and images. A joint AFP-Queensland Police taskforce reviewed nearly 4000 seized files to identify victims. "The sophistication of the offending meant the process of identification took time, skill and determination," AFP Assistant Commissioner Justine Gough said this week.

Authorities are confident they have identified all 87 Australian children depicted in the abuse material. Four overseas victims remain subject to ongoing international police investigation.

The man held all necessary qualifications to work with children. He was arrested in August last year and remains in custody. Initially charged federally with making child exploitation material and misusing a carriage service, NSW Police are now seeking his extradition to face a further 180 charges relating to 23 Sydney victims. The charges carry penalties up to life imprisonment.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald described it as "one of the most horrific child-abuse cases" encountered in nearly 40 years of policing. "Police will continue to relentlessly pursue this matter," he said.

The case forces Queensland's childcare sector to confront uncomfortable questions about institutional safeguards. While authorities have not identified specific systemic failures at individual centres, the fact that one operator worked across multiple Brisbane facilities over years—and later moved to Sydney—underscores how vulnerable closed environments can be without rigorous supervision, background screening and oversight protocols.

Parents across affected centres will likely demand enhanced transparency and additional safeguards from their providers. The matter is scheduled for mention in Brisbane Magistrates Court on 21 August.
