Good Samaritan Killed in Domestic Violence Highway Pursuit

Three people are dead and a man faces three counts of murder following a violent highway chase in Queensland that began with a car theft at knifepoint and escalated into tragedy when an innocent motorist tried to help.

Rafferty Rolfe, 25, has been charged in connection with the deaths of retiree Terry Bishop, 65; Gypsy Satterley, 25; and Jessica Townley, 38, following a collision on the Bruce Highway near Federal, south of Gympie, early on Friday morning.

The tragedy unfolded across a series of escalating incidents. Around midday on Thursday, police allege Rolfe stole an Isuzu MU-X utility vehicle in Gympie's main street, threatening a mother and three children at knifepoint during the theft. Satterley was in the vehicle when Rolfe took it.

By early Friday morning, Satterley — described by police as being in a state of distress — had exited the stolen vehicle and was waiting on the roadside. Police evidence suggests she had attempted to contact authorities for help. Terry Bishop, described by investigators as a good Samaritan, stopped to assist the distressed woman and picked her up in his Nissan Navara.

As Bishop drove Satterley south on the Bruce Highway, Rolfe pursued them in the stolen utility for approximately 4 kilometres. Police will allege that Rolfe then rammed Bishop's ute, causing it to veer onto the wrong side of the highway directly into the path of an oncoming Great Wall utility driven by Jessica Townley.

The collision was catastrophic. Bishop and Satterley were killed in the Navara; Townley died in her vehicle. Rolfe was the sole survivor of the three-vehicle crash, which occurred just before 4am near highway exit 244 and forced the closure of the Bruce Highway.

Detective Superintendent Ben Fadian described the case as a tragedy compounded by circumstance. "He's doing the right thing picking up a person who's in distress on the side of the road and this tragedy has befallen him," Fadian said of Bishop. "For him and his family, this is a tragedy."

Rolfe's actions in the hours leading up to the crash paint a picture of escalating violence. In addition to the murder charges, he faces counts of armed robbery with actual violence, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a motor vehicle with intent to deprive, stealing, evasion, and driving while disqualified as a repeat offender. He was under police guard at hospital, being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

Court documents and a social media fundraiser established by Satterley's family suggest Rolfe had forced the 25-year-old to accompany him following the car theft. Police confirmed Rolfe and Satterley had been in a relationship for only four weeks — a brief and fatal connection that has left two families grieving and a third forever marked by the decision to stop and help a stranger in need.

The case highlights the intersection of domestic violence and road safety, as well as the often-invisible toll of relationships marked by control and coercion. Terry Bishop's final act — stopping to help someone in danger — has become a tragedy that will reverberate through Queensland's legal system and the community.
