Ipswich police urge safe partying as Year 12 and Schoolies season nears
Ipswich Police are reminding residents, especially young people, to plan ahead when hosting parties and travelling to Schoolies this festive season.
Ipswich Police are urging residents, particularly young people, to take proper precautions when hosting parties as Year 12 students finish school and the Christmas and New Year celebration season approaches.
Police say they often receive more calls at this time of year about parties getting out of hand. Sergeant Nadine Webster has been providing 'party safe' information to the community.
Police say everyone has the right to hold a party or special event, but hosts should consider their responsibility to keep celebrations enjoyable and less stressful, especially when younger people are involved.
Tips for hosts include:
- Make the party invitation only and avoid advertising it on social media.
- Set a clear start and finish time.
- Do not allow guests to leave with open drinks or drink on the street or footpath.
- Encourage guests to pre-arrange transport to and from the party.
- Make sure the venue suits the number of people attending.
- Keep a phone accessible so police can be contacted quickly in an emergency.
For those travelling to Schoolies, police ask drivers to observe road rules, obey speed limits, drive to the conditions, wear seatbelts, avoid mobile phone use and not drink or drug drive. They suggest booking a taxi or nominating a designated driver.
Anyone who feels threatened or uncomfortable should leave immediately for a safe place, trust their instincts and look after their friends.
The Queensland Police Service Drug and Alcohol Coordination Unit has resources to help prevent unwanted incidents. Hosts are encouraged to complete a Party Safe Registration Form at least two weeks before the event, handing it in at their local police station, emailing it to police or submitting it online. More information is available on the QPS 'party safe' page, and parents can find Schoolies information on the Schoolies Parent Information page.
Anyone with information for police can contact Policelink using the online suspicious activity form, available 24 hours a day. Information can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
