Man charged in fatal Redbank stabbing after weekend altercation

A man has been charged with murder following a violent altercation at an Ipswich home over the weekend that resulted in the death of a 63-year-old and raised urgent concerns about the safety of a woman and young child who were present during the confrontation.

What happened

Police were called to a unit block on Mine Street in Redbank late on Saturday following reports of serious injuries. Officers arrived to find a 63-year-old Riverview resident with multiple stab wounds to the face and head. Despite emergency treatment provided at the scene, he died while being transported to hospital.

A 28-year-old Boronia Heights man was located at the unit and taken into custody. He has been charged with one count each of murder, threatening violence and drug possession, and is scheduled to appear before Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday.

Detective Inspector David Briese spoke to the severity of what emergency workers encountered. "It was a very confronting scene, obviously with significant wounds to the deceased and a lot of blood," he told reporters.
