Moreton police charge Sunshine Coast teen with 62 offences under Operation Yankee Tread

A Sunshine Coast teenager faces 62 hooning-related charges under Operation Yankee Tread, with 142 offenders charged since August. Police urge reports.

Moreton police have charged a Sunshine Coast teenager with 62 offences under Operation Yankee Tread, a crackdown on dangerous driving across the district.

Police allege the boy was involved in and observed multiple hooning incidents across the Brisbane, Moreton and Sunshine Coast districts between 17 April and 2 September. It will be further alleged that around 8.30pm on 10 September he was the passenger in a Ford Falcon doing burnouts in Morayfield before it crashed into a fence outside an address on Nairn Road. The Ford allegedly kept driving and was abandoned on Dobson Road, and the boy and another teenager then left in a Hyundai i30.

Police attended an address on Mudjimba Avenue in Marcoola on 1 October and arrested a 17-year-old Imbil boy. He was charged with 24 counts each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving on a learner's licence without being properly supervised, 12 counts of spectating a hooning event, and one count each of riding a motorbike unlicensed and driving without due care and attention. He was scheduled to face Maroochydore Childrens Court on 7 October.

Also on 1 October, police attended an address on Lerner Street in Pacific Paradise and arrested a 19-year-old Pacific Paradise man. He was charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle and receiving tainted property, and was due to face Maroochydore Magistrates Court on 19 October.

In a separate incident around 7.50pm on 11 October, police allege a black Audi A5 was driven dangerously on Morayfield Road in Caboolture before crashing into a grey Toyota RAV4 near Esme Avenue. The Audi driver allegedly fled on foot and was found by the Moreton Dog Squad in nearby bushland. The Toyota's driver, a 47-year-old Brendale woman, had minor injuries and was treated by paramedics. Her passenger, a 54-year-old Caboolture man, was not physically injured. A 26-year-old Deception Bay man was charged with offences including dangerous operation of a vehicle, evasion, failing to provide a specimen, and driving over the alcohol limit. He is next due in Caboolture Magistrates Court on 18 November.

A total of 142 offenders have been charged with 618 offences under Operation Yankee Tread since it launched in August.

Senior Sergeant Tom Jakes, Officer in Charge of Moreton District Tactical Crime Squad, said: "We are bringing together specialist investigators, Highway Patrol, Tactical Crime Squad and Intelligence officers to form a single, intelligence-led capability focused on disrupting prolific offenders and improving community safety."

Police encourage residents to report dangerous driving to 13HOON (134 666) or Policelink (131 444), or through the Policelink website, where photos and videos can be uploaded. If it is happening now or is life-threatening, call Triple Zero (000).
