Mother admits guilt in toddler hot car tragedy

A Townsville mother has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her three-year-old daughter, Rylee Rose Black, who died after being left in a locked car during soaring temperatures nearly three years ago.

Laura Rose Peverill, 32, entered her plea at an arraignment in the Townsville Supreme Court this week. The admission ends speculation about how the case would proceed and sets the stage for sentencing later this year.

The tragedy unfolded in November 2020 when Rylee was left in a car parked outside a home in Burdell, a suburb north of Townsville. The vehicle was locked in the middle of the day while temperatures climbed. By the time the child was removed and rushed to Townsville University Hospital around 3:30pm, she could not be revived.

The case drew significant public attention as it raised fresh questions about child supervision and parental responsibility. Rylee's father, Peter Black—separated from Peverill at the time—attended court this week, where he held a small unicorn toy that had belonged to his daughter, a poignant reminder of the life lost.

Peverill's guilty plea means the case will proceed directly to sentencing without a trial. Her legal team had requested a sentencing date in September to allow time to gather psychiatric reports for the court to consider. Justice David North instead scheduled the matter for sentencing on October 6, 2023.

The co-accused, Aaron Hill, who was Peverill's partner at the time and the owner of the home outside which the car was parked, remains charged with manslaughter. Hill has not yet entered a plea and is scheduled for arraignment in July. He remains on bail.

The case highlights the dangers of young children being left unattended in vehicles. Even brief periods in locked cars during warm weather can prove fatal, as internal temperatures can soar rapidly. The incident occurred during spring in Queensland, when midday temperatures were already substantial.

Sentencing will provide the court an opportunity to weigh Peverill's guilty plea against the circumstances of the death and any mitigating factors, including her psychiatric state at the time. The outcome is likely to be closely watched by child welfare advocates and legal observers across Queensland.
