Murder charge after fatal stabbing in Redbank unit

A 63-year-old man has died and a 28-year-old has been charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in Ipswich, with police describing the incident as deeply confronting for emergency responders attending the scene.

Officers and paramedics responded to a residential unit on Mine Street in Redbank at approximately 10:25pm on Saturday evening following reports of a serious injury. On arrival, emergency services located the 63-year-old Riverview man suffering from multiple stab wounds to his face and head. Despite receiving immediate treatment at the scene, the man died during transport to hospital.

A 28-year-old from Boronia Heights, who was present at the unit, was taken into custody at the scene. He has been charged with murder, threatening violence and drug possession relating to methamphetamine.

The nature of the incident has been reflected in how authorities have characterized the scene. Detective Inspector David Briese, speaking to reporters, described the circumstances confronting emergency responders with stark clarity. "It was a very confronting scene, obviously with significant wounds to the deceased and a lot of blood," he said, emphasizing the challenging conditions facing paramedics and officers attending the unit.

The immediate aftermath—with significant bloodshed and severe injuries—has left a strong impression on those involved in responding to the call. Police observations underscore the intensity of the violence and the stark reality faced by first responders to serious violent crime.

Investigation into what sparked the violence continues. While police have confirmed that the 28-year-old and 63-year-old knew each other, the exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation. Detective Briese indicated that detectives remain focused on establishing the full sequence of events. "Detectives from Ipswich are working to determine what happened leading up to the male being stabbed," he said.

Additional details have emerged during investigation. Police allege that three people were inside the unit when the altercation occurred: the two men and a 30-year-old woman with her four-year-old son. The charged man allegedly threatened to kill the woman during the incident.

A large knife was recovered at the scene, and police also allege they discovered methamphetamine belonging to the 28-year-old.

The 28-year-old is due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday to face the charges, with the investigation continuing as authorities work to establish the complete circumstances of the fatal stabbing.
