Police hold personal safety outreach at Chermside

Police from the North Brisbane Crime Prevention Unit spoke with Chermside locals on 4 November about practical ways to stay safe when out and about.

Police spoke with the Chermside community on Wednesday 4 November about practical ways to stay safe when out and about.

Officers from the North Brisbane Crime Prevention Unit, Police Liaison Officers and the North Brisbane Mobile Police Beat attended the area. Police say adopting practical safety strategies can help reduce the risk of victimisation and help people respond effectively if their safety is threatened.

Information on personal safety for adults, seniors and youth is available on the Queensland Police Service online personal safety website.

Police shared several tips to help people appear confident in their surroundings:

Use strong, positive body language to appear self-assured. Stay aware of your surroundings and alert to what is going on around you. Listen to and trust your instincts, and if you sense danger from someone, something or a place, remove yourself from the situation immediately.

Remove headphones and avoid using your mobile phone while walking or crossing the road, because distraction reduces your awareness and can make you more vulnerable to a potential offender. Where possible, walk in well-lit areas and face oncoming traffic. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Anyone with information for police can contact Policelink, including by using the online suspicious activity form through the Queensland Police Service reporting page, 24 hours a day.

Information can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or through the Crime Stoppers Queensland website.

This report is based on information released by Queensland Police Service.
