Police shoot man during regional drug operation

A targeted drug operation in regional Queensland has escalated into a fatal police shooting, with officers saying they faced an armed threat during an arrest attempt.

The 39-year-old New South Wales man was shot outside a motel on Greenhill Road in Ilbilbie on Monday morning, approximately 75 kilometres south of Mackay, Queensland Police confirmed.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said officers were conducting focused enforcement action at the location, targeting the specific individual wanted on several offences. As police approached the suspect's vehicle in the motel car park, the man entered the car.

Officers moved in to remove him from the vehicle when he allegedly drew a firearm. Responding to what they described as an immediate and direct threat to their safety, police opened fire. The man was struck during the exchange.

"Their life was threatened," Ms Carroll said when outlining the circumstances that prompted officers to use lethal force.

Paramedics and police personnel at the scene immediately provided emergency medical assistance, but the man died from his injuries sustained in the shooting.

The incident has triggered formal investigation procedures. Queensland's Ethical Standards Command will lead a comprehensive examination of the police response, with the Crime and Corruption Commission providing independent oversight. These investigations are standard when police use lethal force resulting in death, forming part of Queensland's accountability mechanisms for critical incidents involving law enforcement.

Officers remained at the scene as investigations commenced. Queensland Ambulance services also responded to provide emergency support.
