Registration plate thefts spike in Boondall, Banyo and Windsor
North Brisbane police urge residents to guard their number plates after a spike in thefts on October 25 and 26, and are offering free anti-theft screw packs.
North Brisbane police are urging residents to take preventative action after a spike in registration plate thefts between October 25 and 26, particularly in the suburbs of Boondall, Banyo, Stafford Heights and Windsor.
Police say thieves often target registration plates to avoid or delay detection while committing other offences. Because number plate theft is typically opportunistic, residents can reduce the risk by parking their vehicles off the street, behind gates or in locked garages whenever possible.
To help the community protect their vehicles, the Gateway District Crime Prevention Unit has introduced free anti-theft screw packs. The packs include specially designed one-way screws and information on vehicle security. Once installed, the screws make it significantly harder for thieves to remove registration plates, as they can only be unscrewed with a specialised tool available to police.
Residents of North Brisbane can order a free pack through the online order form on the Queensland Police Service website.
Anyone with information for police can contact Policelink 24 hours a day by using the online suspicious activity form on the Policelink website.
