Retirement village safety questioned after murder charge

The discovery of a woman's body at a Kawana retirement village has prompted safety concerns across Rockhampton's independent living sector, after a 68-year-old local man was charged with her murder.

The 74-year-old woman was found dead at Alexandra Garden on Withers Street on July 16, where she had been residing in an independent unit. Police say the accused, also from Kawana, knew the woman.

Detectives from the Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Branch, supported by the Homicide Investigation Unit, arrived at the retirement village early in the week to establish a full crime scene investigation. The 68-year-old man was charged with murder and remained in police custody ahead of his appearance before Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Monday.

The death has sent ripples through the retirement village community in central Queensland, where hundreds of seniors live in independent units marketed as secure environments allowing older Australians to maintain autonomy while enjoying the safety of a managed community.
