Three killed as man charged with murder in Bruce Highway crash

A Queensland man charged with three counts of murder following a horrific three-vehicle highway collision on Friday has sparked outrage and grief across multiple fronts, with the families of the victims and police investigators highlighting both the tragedy of circumstance and the alleged brutality of the incident.

Rafferty Rolfe, 25, of Yandina, survived the crash near Federal, south of Gympie, on the Bruce Highway. He faces three murder charges in connection with the deaths of Terry Bishop, 65; Gypsy Satterley, 25; and Jessica Townley, 38.

Police allege Rolfe had stolen an SUV at knifepoint in Gympie 12 hours before the collision and pursued Ms Satterley's vehicle for approximately 4 kilometres, ultimately ramming it and causing it to careen into oncoming traffic.

The family of Ms Satterley, described as a mother of two, has responded with particular anguish. In a GoFundMe appeal, they alleged that Rolfe had forced the 25-year-old to accompany him on the night of the tragedy—a claim that paints a picture of coercion and desperation beneath the headlines of the crash itself.

For law enforcement, the focus has shifted to the characterization of Terry Bishop as an unwitting victim whose act of mercy proved fatal. Ms Satterley had fled the stolen vehicle and was found in distress on the roadside around 3.30am. It was Mr Bishop, a retiree and farmer, who stopped to help.

"She was located by Mr Terry Bishop in a state of distress," Detective Superintendent Ben Fadian of the North Coast Regional Crime Coordination said. "He appears to have been a good Samaritan who's helped out a person who was in distress and he's a victim of circumstance."

That characterisation has become central to police messaging around the incident. Supt Fadian's comments reflected the anguish of the families involved: "For him and his family, this is a tragedy. He's doing the right thing picking up a person who's in distress on the side of the road and this tragedy has befallen him. The families of these victims are still distraught, their grief is still raw, it won't extinguish for them."

Jessica Townley, an alpaca farmer and mother, was driving the third vehicle—the Great Wall utility that collided head-on with the Navara after it careened across the centre line.

The sequence of events has underscored how quickly a single criminal act—the alleged knifepoint theft of the SUV—can spiral into multiple deaths and profound loss. Rolfe had threatened a mother and three children during the earlier robbery in Gympie before fleeing in the stolen vehicle.

When police later identified the vehicle, the driver refused to stop, but officers were not pursuing the car at the moment of the three-vehicle collision.

Rolfe also faces charges of armed robbery with actual violence, dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlawful possession, stealing, evasion and driving without a licence while disqualified as a repeat offender. He appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court and will face further hearings.
