Three Killed in Queensland Highway Crash After Good Samaritan Helps Distressed Woman

A retiree's act of compassion has ended in tragedy on a Queensland highway, with police now investigating how a routine rescue became a fatal collision that claimed three lives.

Terry Bishop, 65, was doing what he believed was the right thing when he stopped to help a woman he found distressed on the side of the Bruce Highway near Federal on Friday morning. That single decision cost him and two others their lives.

Rafferty Rolfe, 25, has since been charged with three counts of murder following the crash that unfolded just before 4am. Police allege he had stolen a vehicle at knifepoint hours earlier and pursued the Navara carrying Mr Bishop and Gypsy Satterley, 25, for approximately four kilometres before ramming it into oncoming traffic.

The Nissan Navara collided with a Great Wall utility driven by Jessica Townley, 38, an alpaca farmer and mother. All three died in the three-vehicle collision; Rolfe was the sole survivor and remains in hospital under police guard.

Detective Superintendent Ben Fadian described Mr Bishop's final act with evident emotion, characterising the situation as a tragedy rooted in circumstance rather than fault. "He's doing the right thing picking up a person who's in distress on the side of the road and this tragedy has befallen him," Fadian told reporters.

The detective emphasised the raw grief afflicting all three families, suggesting their anguish would linger far beyond the immediate shock. For the Bishop family and those of the other victims, the emotional toll remains acute—a single moment of assistance derailed by alleged violence and pursuit.

Ms Satterley's family has given voice to their own suffering through a social media fundraiser, alleging that Rolfe forced her into the stolen vehicle on the night of the tragedy. Their account adds another dimension to the unfolding investigation: a relationship spanning only four weeks that police say became the catalyst for the wider cascade of events.

The sequence of alleged actions is stark. Rolfe is accused of stealing the Isuzu MU-X SUV by threatening a mother and three children at knifepoint in Gympie's main street twelve hours before the crash. Ms Satterley fled the vehicle and was rescued by Mr Bishop, who had encountered her in distress.

When Rolfe pursued them at high speed, the Navara veered across the wrong side of the Bruce Highway, colliding with Ms Townley's approaching utility. The impact left no survivors among the three vehicles' occupants except Rolfe himself.

Beyond the murder charges, Rolfe faces a string of additional accusations including armed robbery with actual violence, dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlawful possession and driving while disqualified as a repeat offender. Police had earlier spotted the stolen vehicle but were not in pursuit at the time of the fatal collision.

The tragedy has reignited focus on the unpredictable risks of roadside assistance and the escalating nature of alleged domestic coercion. For the families grieving Mr Bishop, Ms Satterley and Ms Townley, the losses represent not just the statistics of a highway crash, but three lives whose paths intersected in tragedy.
