Townsville teenager's death treated as suspicious

Police in Townsville are investigating the death of an 18-year-old man found near a party venue over the weekend, with initial findings suggesting he may have died under suspicious circumstances.

Kane Moore was discovered in Rupertswood Park near Alice River on Saturday morning after a member of the public found his body. Police believe he died either late Friday evening or early Saturday morning, in a location close to where a substantial gathering had taken place the previous night.

The discovery of multiple injuries on Moore's body prompted authorities to classify the death as suspicious rather than attributing it to natural causes. Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Lawson confirmed during a statement released Monday that the nature and extent of the injuries ruled out a straightforward medical incident.

"There was a number of injuries on the deceased that caused us to believe that it's not just a sudden death that's occurred as a result of a natural incident," Lawson said.

The investigation has focused heavily on the party that occurred near where Moore's body was located. Police acknowledge that the gathering saw varying numbers of attendees throughout the evening, and establishing a complete picture of who was present and what occurred has become central to the inquiry.

Lawson outlined the investigative approach: "There were varying numbers at the party at various points throughout the night. We are identifying those people involved and interviewing them to establish what occurred that led to the death of this young person."

So far, no charges have been laid, and police have not released details about potential causes beyond confirming the presence of injuries. The investigation remains in its early stages, with authorities working methodically through interviews with party attendees.

A crucial appeal has been made to the public. Police are seeking dashcam footage from vehicles that may have travelled along Hervey Range Road or through the Rupertswood Park area during Friday night and Saturday morning. Such video evidence could prove pivotal in establishing what happened and corroborating witness accounts.

Beyond the investigation itself, Moore's death has sent shockwaves through his local community. His sister, Mikaela, posted a tribute on social media reflecting on their relationship. "I love you Kane, your cheeky and goofy personality will be forever missed," she wrote. "You were the best brother anyone could ever ask for. You were the best kid and you were so loved by everyone. Forever 18."
