Choupette Steals the Show at 2023 Met Gala Tribute

New York's fashion elite gathered on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art this week for the industry's most exclusive night, with A-listers celebrating the life and work of Karl Lagerfeld in unexpected—and decidedly feline—fashion.

The 2023 Met Gala, hosted by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, centred on the Costume Institute's exhibition "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," honouring the legendary designer who passed away in 2019. Known for his work at Balmain, Chloé, Fendi and Chanel, Lagerfeld's influence shaped modern fashion across decades. The benefit, which raised over $20 million at last year's event, drew approximately 600 of the world's most recognisable faces, each crafting outfits to match the evening's theme.

But this year's most talked-about tribute didn't come from any couture house—it came from Lagerfeld's most beloved companion, a Birman cat named Choupette.

The designer's devotion to his feline muse became the unexpected centrepiece of the night, with multiple stars channelling the cat's spirit. Actor Jared Leto arrived dressed as an oversized version of Choupette, a choice that immediately captivated social media. The boldly absurd interpretation of the theme gained rapid traction online, proving that sometimes fashion's most memorable moments come from embracing whimsy over restraint.

Singer and rapper Doja Cat took a different approach, adorning herself with cat-inspired prosthetics and ears that transformed her appearance into a feline tribute. Her take on the theme, while more subtle than Leto's spectacle, added to an evening increasingly defined by the unexpected prominence of Choupette's legacy.

Even the cat herself weighed in on the proceedings—in a manner of speaking. Choupette, reportedly declining an invitation to the event, chose instead to remain "cosy at home," a decision that somehow only amplified her cultural moment.

The Met Gala's hosts for this year were announced in January by Vogue: Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and Dua Lipa joined Wintour in shepherding attendees through the evening. The event has maintained its reputation as fashion's most exclusive night since Wintour took the helm nearly three decades ago, with tickets commanding up to $75,000 and guest lists remaining tightly guarded secrets. Designers are typically permitted to bring one celebrity "muse," though even these invitations require Wintour's personal approval.

The gala has seen its share of controversy over the years. Last year's appearance by reality television star Kim Kardashian in a reproduction of Marilyn Monroe's iconic JFK-era gown sparked fierce debate among fashion historians and enthusiasts. More recently, politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's 2021 choice to wear a dress emblazoned with "tax the rich" divided observers over the statement's sincerity.

This year, however, the conversation centred less on sartorial provocation and more on the playful absurdity of honouring a man through his pet. What takes place inside the museum after the red carpet remains strictly off-limits to cameras and social media, preserving the mystique that keeps the Met Gala among the most coveted invitations in global culture.
