Farmers Face Harvest Crisis Amid Visa Grant to Illegal Arrivals

Australian farmers are bracing for harvest season amidst a critical labour shortage, exacerbated by ongoing delays with working holiday visa processing, according to recent reports from 4BC Brisbane.

Former immigration department official Gary Hardgrave expressed frustration over the government's decision to grant permanent residency to approximately 30,000 people who arrived in Australia via boat after 2013. He argues that these resources would be better directed towards addressing immediate agricultural needs.

“Farmers right across regional Australia are gearing up for harvest right now, but they don’t have the hands on deck,” Hardgrave said. “We need people to pick fruit. But people who've come here illegally…are getting visas.”

Federal MP for Mallee, Dr Andrew Webster, echoed these concerns, highlighting the impact of delays in processing working holiday maker visas, particularly from Canada, the UK and Ireland – traditionally a reliable workforce for Australia’s broadacre cropping industry. He attributed the slowdown to changes implemented by Minister Tony Burke.

The granting of permanent residency has also been criticised as potentially encouraging further illegal arrivals, prompting warnings about the resurgence of people-smuggling operations. Critics contend that those who have arrived illegally and sought asylum have incurred significant costs on the Australian legal system through lengthy appeals processes.

Hardgrave stressed the importance of prioritising genuine nation-building efforts rather than perceived political gains. He recalled a time when migration policies were focused on addressing Australia's specific needs, contrasting that approach with what he sees as the current government’s focus on securing votes through immigration.
