Armed Standoff Triggers Warwick Lockdown Amid Weekend of Crisis

A Queensland town descended into lockdown as police conducted emergency operations hunting an armed person—marking the second major security crisis the state grappled with in as many days.

The emergency declaration came Monday evening in Warwick, a town roughly 130 kilometres south-east of Brisbane. Police sealed off a four-street zone encompassing Wood Street, Gore Street, Grafton Street and Dragon Street, ordering residents to lock their doors and remain indoors as officers searched the area.

For those living inside the exclusion zone, the night proved harrowing. Police sirens wailed through the darkness while officers made announcements over loudspeakers, keeping residents awake and anxious. Some took to social media pleading for updates, their messages betraying the fear that gripped the community as emergency operations unfolded beyond their windows.

"The alarms and sirens and announcements have been continuing for quite some time," one frustrated resident posted online. "I feel like an update could help."

The Warwick incident followed by little more than a day another, far deadlier emergency. Over the weekend, a 50-year-old man barricaded himself inside a home in Kirwan, near Townsville, triggering a 10-hour standoff with police. The man, who had been inside the property since around 8pm on Sunday, refused to negotiate as trained officers and negotiators attempted to coax him out using loudspeaker announcements.

The situation deteriorated rapidly. The man opened fire on nearby homes, vehicles parked on the street, and the police officers attempting to contain the situation. Residents nearby heard the distinctive sounds of gunshots followed by the metallic cocking of police weapons as officers returned fire or took cover. Police vehicles were struck—one took rounds to the front, another had its tyres punctured—before nearby residents were hurriedly evacuated.

When the standoff ended, the 50-year-old was found dead inside the property, with police later confirming he had died from self-inflicted wounds. One witness, a 23-year-old resident who watched the incident unfold, described the terror of hearing gunfire erupt without warning near his home.

"At first, I thought it was just a couple of loud bangs and then I heard another gunshot go off and then the cocking of weapons," he told ABC Radio. "The next minute cop cars rock up... one or two of them gets hit."

The rapid succession of two major emergencies left police and communities reeling. Acting Superintendent Chris Lawson defended the lockdown measures in Kirwan, noting that the threat had been very real. "It was more than a threat," he said. "There were actually shots fired last night so we made sure we locked down the place as best as we could."
