Australia summons Israeli ambassador over Zomi Frankcom killing

Australia has summoned Israel's ambassador in Canberra after the Israel Defense Forces cleared its own personnel of criminal liability over the deadly strike on a World Central Kitchen convoy in Gaza that claimed the life of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom.

Frankcom was one of seven World Central Kitchen staff killed in April 2024 when an IDF strike hit their humanitarian convoy in Gaza. The organisation had been coordinating food relief efforts in the territory when the attack occurred.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the Australian government as "outraged" by the Israeli military's decision not to pursue criminal proceedings against those responsible, saying the outcome "falls far short of the accountability we expect."

Wong directed Australia's ambassador to Israel to personally convey Canberra's position on the matter to Israeli authorities, while simultaneously calling in Israel's ambassador to Australia, Hil Newman, for a meeting to discuss the decision. That meeting was scheduled for Thursday morning.

Wong also flagged that the government was considering further steps in response, though she did not elaborate on what those measures might entail.

Regional Development Minister Christy McBain added her voice to the criticism earlier in the day, expressing deep disappointment at Israel's decision not to hold anyone criminally accountable for Frankcom's death.

Shadow Defence Minister James Patterson said he shared those concerns and would seek a full briefing to understand the basis for the decision. "Zomi Frankcom never should have been killed," Patterson said. "It's a tragedy that she was, and it is incredibly concerning to hear this news out of Israel."

The World Central Kitchen attack drew widespread international condemnation when it occurred, with multiple countries pressing Israel for a full investigation and accountability. Israel initially dismissed senior military officers over the incident and stated procedural failures were to blame, but the decision to foreclose criminal prosecution has reignited diplomatic tension with Canberra.

The Australian government's response reflects growing frustration among Western allies over Israel's internal accountability mechanisms in the ongoing Gaza conflict.
