Missing fisherman off Mackay coast as rescue efforts continue

A desperate search continues for a fisherman missing off central Queensland after his boat capsized, exposing the dangers that even experienced mariners face when conditions deteriorate unexpectedly on open water.

Three men aboard a fishing vessel activated an emergency radio beacon from Creal Reef—situated roughly 80 to 150 kilometres offshore from Mackay—at about 8:10 pm on Thursday night. Coast Guard and police were alerted immediately, but the rescue effort faced immediate obstacles. Poor visibility and the distance offshore meant rescue craft needed five to six hours to reach the site, a window during which the situation could only worsen for those in the water.

The first sign of the crew came when a rescue helicopter located one man clinging to the overturned hull late Thursday night. However, an unexpected development hampered what should have been a straightforward recovery. Before rescue crews could reach him, the man separated from the vessel—a turn that remains unexplained. Senior Constable Syrrell Howard acknowledged the mystery: "For some unknown reason, the man has become detached from the vessel."

As night progressed into Friday, visibility gradually improved. At approximately 5:55 am, a patrol aircraft spotted one of the missing fishermen, and rescue vessels were able to reach and extract a 44-year-old from Grasstree Beach roughly an hour later. He was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital in serious condition. A second successful rescue followed about five hours after the first—a 43-year-old man from Bray Park was located, retrieved, and also transported to hospital.

The third crew member, a 41-year-old also from Grasstree Beach, remains unaccounted for. The circumstances carry added weight: he is the brother of one of the rescued men. All three fishermen were described as experienced, yet their knowledge of the sea offered limited protection when emergencies unfolded with such speed.

Queensland Police have committed to continuing the search. "We will continue to search until there's been a determination by health experts that there is limited or no chance of anyone being recovered alive," Howard told media on Friday. That commitment reflects both the uncertainty of maritime rescue and the reality that such operations often extend well beyond initial emergency response.

Police are asking the public—boaties and other recreational water users in the region—to report any sightings immediately. In large-scale ocean search operations, where official resources are thinly spread across vast areas, civilian awareness frequently proves critical to locating missing persons.

The incident underscores the inherent risks of commercial and recreational fishing in Australian waters. Distance from shore, rapidly shifting weather, and the time required for rescue teams to mobilise create an environment where tragedy can unfold quickly. While two men are receiving treatment and recovering from their ordeal, the focus now remains on bringing the missing fisherman to safety.
