Three dead in Bruce Highway crash involving robbery suspect

Three people are dead and a major Queensland highway has become the scene of a crime-fuelled tragedy following a violent three-vehicle collision. The incident, which occurred on the Bruce Highway near Federal early on Friday morning, has left a community grieving and raises questions about the chain of events that led to the crash.

The victims include Jessica Townley, 38, a well-known alpaca breeder in the region; Gypsy Satterley, 25, a mother; and a 65-year-old man. The sole survivor, Rafferty Rolfe, 25, has been charged with armed robbery in connection with what police say was a crime-related incident.

According to Queensland police, the crash occurred shortly before 4am when events took a dramatic turn on the northbound lanes of the highway. Police allege that one driver pursued a man and woman in another vehicle before attempting to ram their car. The pursuit and attempted ram caused both vehicles to cross the centre line, putting them directly in the path of a third car heading southbound. The subsequent collision between all three vehicles proved fatal for the three occupants.

The chain of events appears to have begun the previous day. Police allege that Rolfe stole a woman's Isuzu MU-X at knifepoint at Gympie on Thursday. That alleged carjacking set in motion a sequence of events that would culminate in the highway tragedy.

But the numbers tell only part of the story. Jessica Townley's death has struck a deep chord with her community. Friends and family describe her as the "rock" of her family – a devoted fiancée and stepmother to three children. Those who knew her speak of a woman defined by her tireless work ethic and her ability to lift others around her.

"Jess was so special and meant so much to them," said Kelly Goodwin, a close friend who established a GoFundMe fundraiser in Ms Townley's memory. "She was hard working and didn't stop till the sun went down. She would always have a laugh and brightened any day."

The community's response has been immediate and heartfelt. By the weekend, the GoFundMe fundraiser had raised more than $11,000 from supporters seeking to help Ms Townley's family during this time of grief. Messages of condolence have flooded in from school communities and broader networks affected by her loss.

"Jess was so beautiful inside and out," wrote one wellwisher. "We are all thinking about you at school and are here for support."

Ms Satterley, also killed in the crash, is remembered as a mother whose life was cut short. The three deaths represent a significant loss to the Federal community and the broader Sunshine Coast region.

Rolfe was pulled from one of the vehicles at the crash scene. He is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday to face one count of robbery with violence whilst armed. Police continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the crash and the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
