Search continues for missing Queensland fisherman after rescue

Queensland rescue crews have intensified their search for a missing fisherman after a dramatic operation that successfully pulled two crew members from the ocean following a boat capsizing off the central coast.

The three experienced fishermen encountered disaster when their vessel overturned on Thursday night at Creal Reef, a popular fishing location roughly 80 nautical miles from Mackay. An emergency position indicating radio beacon transmitted a distress signal at 8:10pm, prompting immediate action from rescue authorities, though responders faced significant challenges reaching the remote offshore location.

Police and rescue helicopters laboured through poor visibility as they raced against time. Search vessels required five to six hours to arrive at the capsized boat's position, during which sea conditions continued to deteriorate. The difficult conditions and distance meant that every minute of delay complicated the rescue effort.

The first breakthrough came Friday morning when a 44-year-old fisherman from Grasstree Beach was spotted holding onto the overturned hull. He was rescued at approximately 7am and flown to Mackay Base Hospital in serious condition. Within hours, a second survivor emerged from the water, with a 43-year-old Bray Park resident recovered just past 11am and similarly transported to hospital for emergency treatment.

But the third member of the crew—a 41-year-old from Grasstree Beach and brother to one of the rescued men—has not been accounted for. Police classify him as missing and express mounting concern about his prospects as hours pass without contact.

The rescue operation has revealed troubling details about the crew's ordeal in the water. A helicopter crew sighted the third fisherman on Thursday evening but lost visual contact in the worsening conditions. When rescue boats finally reached the location, the man was no longer clinging to the vessel. Queensland Police Senior Constable Syrrell Howard indicated that the separation occurred without clear explanation, adding to the mystery surrounding his disappearance.

Despite these setbacks, authorities have made unambiguous their resolve to continue. Police announced they will sustain search operations at full intensity until medical experts determine there is little to no possibility of recovery, according to Howard's statement to media. This position reflects the commitment to exhausting all possibilities before scaling down efforts, even as the search extends into its second day.

The ongoing operation underscores both the perils of offshore fishing and the dedication of emergency response teams working in challenging maritime conditions. Officials have broadened the appeal beyond formal rescue personnel, calling on other boat operators and recreational water users throughout the region to watch for any sign of the missing fisherman and report immediately to police.

Both hospitalised survivors are receiving treatment for exposure and the psychological trauma of their ordeal. Their rescue represents a partial success in what remains an active emergency situation with the outcome still in question.
