Brock Purdy Embraces 'Aussie Battler' Tag Ahead of MCG Showdown

Brock Purdy has touched down in Melbourne and he is loving every minute of it — the food, the city streets, and now the idea that 100,000 Australians might see a little of themselves in him come Friday night at the MCG.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback spoke to ESPN Australia shortly after arriving, describing a long-haul flight that went better than most would expect. With centre Jake Brendel in the row ahead and linebacker Dre Greenlaw alongside him, Purdy said the squad settled quickly into Australian time by resisting the urge to nap and getting straight out to explore the city.

"Everyone loved it," Purdy said. "We had a great opportunity to walk around, get some good food, and just experience something new together. Obviously we're here for the game and we've got to win — but doing it with all the guys has been really fun."

The trip carries weight well beyond the jet lag. Purdy is stepping into a quarterback tradition that includes Joe Montana and Steve Young — two of the greatest to play the position — and he is clear-eyed about what wearing the red and gold means.

"Every single day I pinch myself," he said. "The 49er logo means Super Bowls, Hall of Famers, great players. I take this with a lot of pride."

Young himself has offered counsel along the way. Before one Super Bowl appearance, the Hall of Fame quarterback visited the squad and delivered a message that has stayed with Purdy: nothing is given, you have to go and take it, and when the game stops going to plan you adapt and find a way together. It is advice that has shaped how Purdy approaches adversity, and he says the group enters this season feeling ready to apply it.

The connection to Australian sporting culture runs deeper than a whistle-stop visit. Purdy was pick 262 in the 2022 NFL Draft — the very last selection, a label that has followed him ever since — and he has spent every year since proving the doubters wrong. When that journey was framed to him as the kind of underdog arc Australians call the "Aussie battler", the quarterback lit up.

"I love that," he said. "I've always loved an underdog story. Being a late recruit in college, going last in the draft, trying to make the roster — I'm grateful for where we are, but I still have that chip on my shoulder. To play in front of all the Australians with that kind of culture really excites me."

He even floated the possibility of teaching the MCG crowd his trademark end-zone celebration — the "Dougie" — should he find the end zone on Friday.

"If I run one in, I might have to teach all of Australia how to do the Dougie," he said with a grin. "Stay tuned."

The 49ers face off at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday in what shapes as one of the most anticipated NFL international games in recent memory, with Purdy at the centre of it all — underdog turned franchise quarterback, and apparently a natural fit for a crowd that has always backed the long shot.
