Goodwin wins Johnny Warren Medal after World Cup comeback

Craig Goodwin has won the Johnny Warren Medal, claiming A-League player of the season honours with 41 votes—a commanding margin that reflects a campaign defined by complete attacking play rather than raw goal-scoring dominance.

The Adelaide United captain's 15 goals and 11 assists proved more persuasive than Jamie Maclaren's league-leading 24 goals for Melbourne City. Maclaren finished third on 26 votes, behind Western Sydney's Brandon Borrello on 33 votes.

The distinction matters. Goodwin's award caps an unlikely resurgence after battling osteitis pubis and managing just one week of pre-season before Adelaide's opening match against Wellington. The 31-year-old Socceroos star had feared his World Cup dream might evaporate. Yet he not only reached Qatar—where he scored for Australia in a run to the round of 16—but delivered this season's standout sustained performance.

"I only had a one-week pre-season and literally put the boots on one week out from the Wellington game," Goodwin recalled on Thursday night when presented the award in Sydney. "At one point along that path, I thought I might not get to the World Cup, but I'm very thankful to the Adelaide medical staff that I was able to get there."

His recognition extends beyond individual achievement. Adelaide's success, built on Goodwin's attacking contributions, earned coach Carl Veart the A-League's coach of the year award. Yet the Reds fell short of a grand final berth, losing a semi-final to Central Coast, who will face Melbourne City in Saturday's decider.

"The championship with Adelaide is the main goal," said Goodwin. "I've had one taste of it back in 2016, and we've been that close the last four or five years."

The awards ceremony also recognised emerging talent. Jordan Bos earned young player of the year after a breakout season for Melbourne City, though he departs for Belgian club Westerlo on a record transfer. Sarah Hunter, the 19-year-old Sydney FC midfielder, claimed women's young player honours.

In women's player of the season voting, Alex Chidiac's Julie Dolan Medal win proved that limited minutes need not limit impact: the Melbourne Victory midfielder appeared in just 13 of 20 regular-season games yet still captured the award. The 24-year-old, on loan from NWSL club Racing Louisville, scored six goals and is tipped to earn her first Women's World Cup squad selection for July's tournament on home soil.

Jamie Maclaren's 24 goals secured him the Golden Boot for a sixth time and fourth consecutive season. Referee Chris Beath was honoured with the referee of the year award before his retirement following Saturday's grand final.
