Magpie Clinches Etchells Gold Coast Title in Thrilling Final Races

Graeme Taylor and his Mornington Yacht Club crew have won the International Etchells Class Gold Coast Championship in a dramatic climax, clinching the title with two decisive race victories on the final day of competition at Southport Yacht Club.

Taylor, sailing AUS1486 Magpie alongside Richie Allanson and James Mayo, edged out Mark Roberts' AUS1473 Fumanchu2 in a battle that shifted dramatically over the weekend. After Roberts and crew Ben Lamb and Jake Newman established a commanding lead on the opening day's racing, Taylor's team executed a flawless comeback strategy that proved decisive in the light, fickle winds.

Saturday's opening day saw Fumanchu2 stamp their authority on the fleet. Roberts capitalised on a clean start in the opening race to build a substantial lead and win decisively. Magpie responded in the second heat, executing a superior tactical approach that saw them lead from the first mark to the finish. By day's end, after four races, Fumanchu2 held a narrow advantage, with Taylor's Magpie sitting just two points adrift—close enough for everything to play for on the final day.

The breeze had been variable throughout Saturday, shifting from south-westerly to south-easterly, demanding constant tactical adjustments from the competitive fleet. Conditions remained similarly testing heading into Sunday's races.

Taylor's approach to the final day was disarmingly simple. "Before we left the dock we had a straightforward two-point plan," he explained. "Point 1 to win the first race and Point 2 to win the second race."

The strategy nearly came unstuck. In the opening race, Magpie's crew managed only an average start and found themselves squeezed down at the pin end. But superior boat handling on the downwind legs allowed them to claw back, rounding the bottom mark in third before a decisive port-tack call on the long beat carried them past the leaders into first. The win brought Magpie level on points with Fumanchu2, setting up a championship decider.

The final race got underway after two general recalls delayed proceedings. Magpie found themselves in fourth place at the first mark but steadily worked their way up through aggressive upwind and downwind tactics. Rounding the bottom mark in third, another port-tack manoeuvre put them in front as the race headed to its shortened finish point at the top of the course.

Taylor held firm to secure their second victory of the day and the championship, capping a comeback that demonstrated the tactical sharpness and boat-handling excellence demanded by one-design sailing at the elite level. The win marks a significant achievement as the Etchells class builds momentum toward next year's World Championships, which will be hosted in Australia.
