Magpie seals Etchells title with flawless final-day surge

Graeme Taylor's Magpie has claimed the International Etchells Class Gold Coast Championship, executing a perfect final day to overturn an overnight deficit and edge out Fumanchu2 in a tightly contested battle on the Gold Coast.

Sailing from Southport Yacht Club with crew Richie Allanson and James Mayo, Magpie arrived at the decisive final races in third place overall, two points adrift of the leading Fumanchu2 (Mark Roberts, Ben Lamb, Jake Newman). The championship, held over the weekend in the light and tricky conditions the Gold Coast is known for, had remained remarkably tight, with just two points separating the top three boats after Saturday's opening four races.

Taylor's crew approached Sunday's racing with characteristic simplicity. "Before we left the dock we had a simple two-point plan for the day. Point 1 to win the first race and Point 2 to win the second race," Taylor explained. With Fumanchu2 holding the lead but the championship still within reach, it was a plan born of tactical necessity rather than optimism.

The fourth race of the series got under way in a light northeasterly breeze following a lengthy delay and a general recall that caught the entire fleet unprepared. When the fleet eventually lined up cleanly for their second start, Magpie faced immediate adversity. "We had a fairly average start and got ourselves boxed in down at the pin," Taylor recounted. "We struggled to get clear up the first beat, and went around the top in sixth or seventh."

The boat that would become champion showed its mettle on the downwind legs, where Magpie's crew excelled despite the tricky, shifty breeze. Steadily working through the fleet, they had climbed to third by the bottom mark, behind Fumanchu2 and Grant Hudson's Pegasus. On the decisive final leg, Taylor executed a bold tack onto port. "We were first to tack on port, the long leg, and got to second but the top," he said. "Final run was very tricky but we were lucky enough to slide past for the win."

The victory was transformative. Magpie had not only won the race but had dramatically shortened the championship deficit to a single point with one race remaining—a result that set up a grandstand finish.

The final race came after two more general recalls tested the fleet's patience and precision. Magpie again found themselves in fourth place at the first mark, but again demonstrated the downwind prowess that had carried them through the series. Working back into third by the bottom mark, they held position through the final beats as the race was shortened at the top of the course.

When Magpie crossed the finish line for their second consecutive victory of the day, the championship was secure. Taylor's two-point plan had come to perfect fruition, and with it came the International Etchells Class Gold Coast Championship title.

"We were lucky enough to take the lead on the second beat and hold on for our second win of the day," Taylor reflected. "The event on the Gold Coast was fantastic."
