Magpie Surges to Etchells Gold Coast Championship

Graeme Taylor's Magpie has claimed the International Etchells Class Gold Coast Championship with two decisive race wins on the final day of competition, clinching the title over a fleet that included strong performances from Mark Roberts' Fumanchu2 and other top crews.

The championship, sailed from the Southport Yacht Club with races spanning Saturday and Sunday, came down to Sunday's light and tricky conditions. After Day 1, Fumanchu2 held the advantage, but Taylor and his crew of Richie Allanson and James Mayo delivered when it mattered most, with back-to-back wins that proved decisive in the overall standings.

"It was just a lovely day on the Gold Coast but light and tricky to go sailing," Taylor said of the final day. "Before we left the dock we had a simple two-point plan for the day. Point 1 to win the first race and Point 2 to win the second race."

In the opening race of the day, Magpie recovered from a sluggish start where they were boxed in, working their way through the fleet to round the bottom mark in third before ultimately passing Fumanchu2 on the final leg. The win came after Magpie had entered the day trailing the leaders.

"We were first to tack on port, the long leg, and got to second at the top. Final run was very tricky but we were lucky enough to slide past for the win," Taylor explained of that crucial opening race.

The decisive margin came in the second race of the day. Racing in shifty conditions with multiple general recalls before the fleet finally got away, Magpie demonstrated speed across both beats and runs. After rounding the bottom mark in third, Taylor and his crew worked their way into contention on the second beat before holding on for their second consecutive win.

"We were lucky enough to take the lead on the second beat and hold on for our second win of the day," Taylor said of the final race.

The two wins over the course of one competitive day overturned the deficit Magpie faced entering Sunday. Fumanchu2, skippered by Mark Roberts with crew Ben Lamb and Jake Newman, had controlled much of the earlier racing, but couldn't replicate that form when conditions tightened and the pressure mounted.

Grant Hudson's Pegasus and the Western Australian entry Forte also competed through the series, but Magpie's performance on the final day proved the difference-maker in what was a closely contested championship.

The Etchells Gold Coast Championship marks the beginning of a significant run of regattas in Australia ahead of two World Championships scheduled for next year, positioning Magpie as a strong prospect for future international competition.
