After a year of restricted activities due to COVID-19, the Jimboomba Scouts are gearing up for an open day next month, where interested families can learn about the adventurous ways of being a scout.

Michael Gray, group leader and Andrew Farrawell, assistant group leader, have been busy planning the Jimboomba Scout open day for February 27.

Mr Farrawell said being a Scout was all about learning life lessons such as teamwork and leadership, while also spending time outside.

“It’s a great opportunity to get kids off of their screens (phones, ipads, etc) and out of the house,” he said.

“It’s all about being adventurous, getting your hands dirty, spending time outside, learning new life skills, and building up confidence.

“We teach life skills that aren’t taught in school. And, with a strong emphasis on community involvement, most of the kids who go through the Scouts program will end up joining other community groups like the Rotary or Lions later on in their lives.”

Mr Gray said if one of their scouts wants to do something fun, then they’ll give it a red hot go.

“We do hiking, camping, first aide training, leadership training, teamwork activities, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, archery, anything the kids want to do,” he said.

“We’ve got three acres here and are near the dam so there’s plenty to do.

“We have our system too where they can earn badges but they don’t have to do that…if they just want to come along to the fun outdoor activities then that’s okay too.”

Jimboomba Scouts is currently situated at 1-75 Edelsten Road, Jimboomba, and have members from across Logan City and the Scenic Rim.

The Scouts meet weekly, on a different week night depending on their age group, and there’s always a fun weekend activity to be involved in.

With 82 members already on the books, Jimboomba Scouts are excited to welcome more and encourage anyone interested to come along to their open day.

There will be activities, sausage sizzle, bake sale, silent art auction and coffee van there on the day.

You can find more information on the Jimboomba Scout Group Facebook page.
